Carlisle Regeneration boosted by ITV Border selling former Studio to council
Following ITV’s move to new premises at Clifford Court, Carlisle, the former
studios of ITV Border have been bought by Carlisle City Council to help advance
plans for extensive regeneration of the neighbouring industrial estate.
Carlisle City Council bought the prominent 2.37 acre ITV Border site overlooking
Eastern Way, the main road servicing the Durranhill Industrial Estate, in a deal
completed on Thursday, July 2nd.
The sale which was brokered by property consultancy Sanderson Weatherall and
Michael Carigiet Associates has bolstered the council’s already extensive portfolio
of land allocated for employment opportunities around the city – in accordance
with Carlisle Renaissance’s 2009-12 action plan.
Robert Patterson, Director of Commercial Agency at the firm’s Newcastle office
said the purchase was a positive move for regeneration of the estate, which is
south east of the Carlisle city centre and close to Junction 43 of the M6.
He said: “The former studios occupy a significant gateway to the Durranhill Estate,
meaning they would be a key element of any regeneration programme devised for
the land.
“And now that the site is in council hands, a major step towards comprehensive
regeneration has been taken.”
Detailed plans for the site are yet to be drawn up; although it is understood
the land will be used to create new employment.
The plans will be developed by a three-way partnership between Carlisle City
Council, Cumbria County Council and the North West Regional Development Agency.
The partnership, Carlisle Renaissance, is laying the foundations for a detailed
strategy that will outline regeneration plans for a number of sites around the
city, including Durranhill.
